Virtual Colonoscopy is a specialized type of CT exam that can screen for polyps and other abnormalities in the colon. It is also called CT colonography. When compared to a traditional colonoscopy or a barium enema, this is the easiest and safest exam for the patient.
Only some insurance companies cover this procedure, so please check with your insurance provider for details. If you have to pay for this procedure directly, the cost will be discounted and our billing office will work with you regarding the payment.
Our Equipment and Technologists
Licensed and experienced CT Technologists will perform your exam using our state-of the-art equipment that not only produces cross-sectional images, but also produces 3-D reconstructions. And since we are accredited by the American College of Radiology (A.C.R.) to perform CT Scans, you can be assured that our technologists will ensure minimal radiation exposure with each exam.
How to Prepare for a Virtual Colonoscopy
It is very important to clean out your colon the night before your Virtual Colonoscopy. You can get the bowel preparation kit from Guilford Radiology, or you can obtain it from your doctor. Please carefully follow the instructions on the kit.
What to Expect
You will be asked to change into a gown and a technologist will obtain a medical history. You will lie on the exam table on your left side. A very small, flexible tube is passed two inches into the rectum to allow air to be gently pumped into the colon. You will then be asked to roll onto your back. Once the colon is distended with air, you may have a full feeling, but no pain. The technologist will then take some images on your back and the remaining pictures will be taken while you are lying on your stomach.
The entire test takes just 15 minutes to perform, and you will be able to return to normal activities after the exam.
Your doctor(s) will receive a full detailed written report from our highly trained radiologists within one day. We will provide you with a CD copy of your exam, for your personal records or to bring to your referring physician on your follow-up visit. Our goal is to provide you with the highest level of customer service and image quality in a caring and supportive environment.
