Body Fat Composition Exam

Why Get a DXA Body Fat Composition Exam near  North Branford, CT?

The determination of body composition is important because it helps your clinician better predict changes in your health, since body fat composition represents different aspects of growth, aging, malnutrition, and obesity as well as the impact of medical interventions.

What is DXA Body Fat Composition Exam?

Among several methods for studying in vivo human body composition, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has emerged as one of the most effective clinical tools. Typically the energy source produces photons at two different energy levels, which pass through body tissues and are blocked at rates related to its basic composition. Bone is dense due to presence of minerals, calcium and phosphorous, and is readily distinguished from soft tissues. Since bone is denser it will block more of the photons. The unique elemental profiles of bone, fat, and muscle allow for visualization and separate analysis of each tissue type.

Our DXA scanner serves patients from North Branford uses ALARA technology (as low as reasonably allowed) and the scanner is “digital”, meaning that we use computers to improve the quality of the images, and at the same time using a lower x-ray dose. At Guilford Radiology we use the latest state of the art equipment to perform this exam, which only takes several minutes to complete. How to Prepare for a Bone Density Scan near North Branford, CT

Do not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before the exam. Dress comfortably avoiding garments that have zippers, belts or buttons made of metal.

What to Expect

Prior to scanning, our technologist will review your medical history.  You will be asked to fill out a Bone Density Questionnaire and screening sheet to review any past surgical history. You can complete this and bring it with you or our technologists will complete it with you.

You may be asked to wear a gown. You will be asked to lie face-up on a padded table. An x-ray detector or arm is located above the table. To assess your spine, your legs are supported on a padded box to flatten the pelvis and lower spine. To assess your hip, your foot will be placed in a brace that rotates your hip inward. In both cases, the detector arm is slowly passed over the hip and spine generating images on a computer monitor. Just relax and remain still for a few seconds. It is a quick and painless procedure. There are no restrictions after the exam.

You can expect a 30 minute appointment with a 10 minute scan time.
