Guilford Radiology offers X-Ray exams every day to patients who live near North Haven, you can walk-in or give us a call to schedule an appointment. We utilize digital X-ray and have dose limiting capability to assure the lowest radiation exposure possible.
X-ray imaging creates pictures of the inside of your body. The images show the parts of your body in different shades of black and white. X-ray or radiography uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the body's internal structures. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. They are often used to help diagnose fractured bones, look for injury or infection and to locate foreign objects in soft tissue. Some x-ray exams may use an iodine-based contrast material or barium to help improve the visibility of specific organs, blood vessels, tissues or bone. The most familiar use of x-rays is checking for fractures (broken bones), but x-rays are also used in other ways. For example, chest x-rays can spot pneumonia.
Our X-Ray scanner is “digital”, meaning that we use computers to improve the quality of the images. Our knowledgeable, professional technologists will put you at ease and answer all of your questions before the exam.
Most X-Ray exams do not require any preparation prior to the exam. Wear comfortable clothing around the area to be scanned. You may also be asked to wear a gown. When you have an x-ray, you may wear a lead apron to protect certain parts of your body. The amount of radiation you get from an x-ray is small. For example, a chest x-ray gives out a radiation dose similar to the amount of radiation you're naturally exposed to from the environment over 10 days.
Our technologist will take a brief medical history. Most X-rays don’t require any special preparation. The technologist may ask you to take off jewelry, eyeglasses, or any metal objects or clothing that could get in the way of the image. The technologist can take images while you stand up or lie down. It depends on the area of your body being examined. The X-ray tube hangs over the table.
You won’t feel anything during an X-ray, but it can be hard to hold still, and the exam table might be uncomfortable. The technologist may take images from a few different angles, and might use pillows to prop up a body part to get a better view of the area.
X-rays typically take only a few minutes depending on the exam performed.
