A CT Scan (also called “CAT”scan--, which stands for Computerized Axial Tomography) is a diagnostic test which uses a series of X-rays to create cross sectional images, or “slices”. A computer uses these slices to display two- and three-dimensional images. CT images of intern al organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.
CT images provide detailed cross-sectional images of the body that are reviewed by our radiologists. Other commonly performed Killingworth CT exams include CT Angiography, Cardiac Calcium Scoring and Virtual Colonoscopy which are described in further detail in the services section. As an ACR accredited facility, our licensed, caring technologists ensure minimal radiation exposure with each exam.
Licensed and experienced CT Technologists will perform your exam using our state-of-the-art equipment that not only produces cross-sectional images but also produces 3-D reconstructions. All CT scans are done with the latest technology on our Toshiba Aquilion Prime CT Scanner. And since we are accredited by the American College of Radiology (A.C.R.) to perform CT Scans, you can be assured that our technologists will ensure minimal radiation exposure with each exam. Please note that our scanning table has a weight limit of 660 pounds.
Some exams require contrast to be administered intravenously or by mouth. For tests that do not require contrast, no prior preparation is required. For exams requiring contrast a current creatinine test (within 30 days) may be required. The creatinine test is a blood draw that evaluates your kidney function and will normally be performed at your physician's office or lab prior to the exam. If fasting is required, you are a diabetic, or you have any allergies you will be given special instructions by your referring physician. Wear comfortable clothing around the area to be scanned. You may be asked to wear a gown. Also inform your technologist if you have any old images so they may be used for comparison.
Our technologist will take a brief medical history. Some exams require a contrast media, or dye. With your safety in mind, we exclusively use the best non-ionic IV contrast. If you are receiving an oral solution you will be asked to wait 30 to 60 minutes before you are scanned to allow the x-ray dye to move through your digestive tract. If you are receiving IV contrast, you will be asked to lie down on the scanning table the IV will be started. You may feel warm and flushed for a few seconds. The part of your body to be imaged is then positioned in the large doughnut-shaped ring. The CT is quiet and scan time is very short. You may be given specific breathing instructions. You should plan for a 30 to 60 minute appointment. You may return to normal activities following your exam. If you are a diabetic, check with your doctor for instructions before resuming your medication.
We may also offer you shields, which protect sensitive tissues (your eyes, breasts, and thyroid gland) from unnecessary radiation exposure.
